2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this rise, I conducted a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears especially powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
